What is Adequate Insurance?

Benefits provided by Ohio State's Comprehensive Student Health Insurance plan exceed the minimum requirements for student health insurance plans under healthcare law.  Use this tool to compare your plan to the OSU Comprehensive Student Health Insurance Plan: 2015-2016 Plan Comparison Chart.    Key items to look for and compare are the monthly premium cost and the out of pocket costs: deductibles, co-insurance and copayments.

Adequate coverage may vary depending on individual circumstance.  The following guidelines are based on  minimum requirements of student health insurance plans under healthcare law, American College Health Association Standards for Student Health Insurance Plans, benchmarked subsidized plans available in the health insurance marketplace, and our experience in serving Ohio State students.

A private medical health insurance plan through a recognized company that is owned, headquartered, and operated in the United States.

Unlimited annual benefits.

Provides a minimum of 80% coverage of hospitalization fees.

Provides a minimum of 80% coverage of professional fees (e.g., lab tests, x-rays, doctor's visits, etc.).

Has an annual out-of-pocket maximum less than or equal to $2,500.

Has no pre-existing condition exclusions or waiting period.

A low annual deductible so you don't have to pay all, or most of the cost each time you see a doctor. (Under $500 is recommended.)

Covers at least 30 days of inpatient mental health and substance abuse services.

Covers preventive screenings and vaccines.

Has a network provider/facility within 20 miles of Columbus or your campus of enrollment.

Provides worldwide coverage for all services.

Your private insurance plan must be able to provide proof of insurance, usually in the form of a card. Reimbursement programs that are not backed by guaranteed payment are not recommended.

If you are an international student, your private insurance must provide medical evacuation and repatriation benefits. In addition, the criteria found under the International Student Health Insurance Waiver Form must be met.

Foreign insurance plans with U.S. affiliates/representatives and travel insurance plans of any kind do not qualify, including reimbursement arrangements of vouchers for home governments or their U.S.-based consulates
