Eligibility to waive

Participation in SHIP is mandatory, however you can waive enrollment if;

  • You have adequate health insurance coverage
  • You have a Rhode Island, Connecticut or Massachusetts Medicaid plan

Please be aware that not all plans provide adequate coverage, including some out-of-state Medicaid plans or certain HMOs and managed care plans. Be sure to check with your insurance company before waiving coverage.

Students are encouraged not to waive the Student Health Insurance Plan if;

  • You live beyond a 200-mile radius
  • Have restrictive out-of-state managed care insurance coverage
  • Anticipate participating in intercollegiate, club, or intramural sports programs

Students who have an out of area HMO, such as Kaiser Permanente, should not waive coverage as those types of plans only provide coverage in the event of an emergency or in your home area.

International students cannot waive coverage unless they are currently enrolled in a plan of comparable coverage through an U.S.-based insurance company.

Important coverage considerations:
If you are covered by an HMO,  or a plan that has a limited network of acceptable providers in Rhode Island, you may not have coverage for lab tests, x-rays or prescriptions ordered by University Health Services, or the ability to have coverage if seen by a local provider if you are referred outside of University Health Services for care.  Many plans will not pay outside of your home area unless it falls under their definition of an emergency, which may result in you paying for expensive tests or services in full.
