Health Insurance

All Macalester students must verify every year that they carry comprehensive health insurance. The website to waive out or enroll is expected to be available on July 9, 2018, with a deadline of August 24, 2018.

All students are initially billed for the plan; the charge is removed only when the student has gone online and waived out.  Students who wish to enroll in the plan should also go online and accept the policy. Students who are on a state Medicaid plan should contact Sue Rothenbacher, our insurance specialist, at rothenbacher@macalester.edu.

Macalester College requires all students to provide proof of comprehensive, ACA-compliant personal health insurance coverage. Health insurance is required when seeking health care services off-campus and when participating in intercollegiate athletics.

If you have appropriate health insurance coverage that will provide coverage for you while at Macalester College in Minnesota, you may choose to complete the waiver process for the health insurance. If you do not have health care coverage or adequate coverage while at Macalester, you must enroll in the plan offered by the College. The insurance plan offered for the 2018 – 2019 academic year is offered by  United Healthcare Student Resource Insurance. The College strongly discourages and may not accept “specialty plans” such as those targeting international students as student experience has proven most are not adequate. The adage “you get what you pay for” seems to hold true for this type of product.  Students who are on state-sponsored medicaid should consult with Sue Rothenbacher, rothenbacher@macalester.edu.

Note: The College does not generate any income from offering this product and all students may use the Hamre Center for Health & Wellness services no matter what insurance they have.
